Nuneham Courtenay Parish Council News

Playing Field

The parish council has arranged to have the Playing Field grass cut twice already and it should be cut regularly for the rest of the summer. You should start being able to regard the Playing Field as a play area, rather than as some kind of nature reserve.

The Playing Field Association is about to have the first big piece of play equipment installed, plus a couple of picnic tables. The parish council is paying for the big piece of play equipment out of the Community Infrastructure Levy money it received from a development at Notcutts. The other items have been made possible by the Association’s own successful fundraising.

Former Cockadoo/Harcourt Arms

An update about the former Cockadoo/Harcourt Arms.

The building’s owners, the Wellington Pub Company, have assured the district council: "the building is checked by their security team fortnightly who have reported no issues. They replaced some lead flashing 18 months ago when it had been stolen and water was getting in and are not aware of any new leaks. They have advised that they will cut the grass and weeds back to ensure that when it does rain there are no blockages to downpipes and drains ensuring water can be carried away from the building."

The relevant district council officer has written: "I am content that they have systems in place to monitor the security and maintenance of the building. I will confirm with a site visit that the building is weather-tight as they have told me and I will be able to take action to get repairs undertaken if these are necessary. I will update you if I instruct that works need doing in case you see workers on the site at some point but this will not be until the summer as I have no availability currently."

The parish council was surprised to read that the owners have told the district council they have received no offers for continued use of the building as a pub, whereas a company has written to the parish council saying they made just such an offer and the Wellington Pub Company refused it.  How strange.

Full fibre broadband

The internet age is finally coming to Nuneham Courtenay in the form of the government’s Project Gigabit, which offers you Gigaclear full-fibre rollout.

The point of this programme is to target homes and businesses that are not included in broadband companies’ commercial plans, reaching parts of the country that would otherwise miss out.

In this village, Gigaclear is unable to trench along the road to get to each individual house. So, to use the existing Open Reach network, it will need wayleaves from each house to be able to offer the service to everyone: one duct to cover four houses. It will need to run the fibre along the houses, like it is now.

I think this means some of you may only get full fibre broadband if your neighbours agree to Gigaclear running a wire along the front of their house.

Flooding

The long-awaited work is due to be finished by 11th July. At the time of writing, you’re experiencing a lack of rain, but the point is to make it more likely future downpours will safely drain away under the main road at the southern end of the village instead of flooding some unfortunate residents’ houses.
