However, planning applications, in or affecting the Parish of Doddiscombsleigh, are sent to the Parish Council for their comment. The Parish Councilors are not normally professional planners; their key role is to add local knowledge where appropriate and to help effectively engage the local community in the planning process.

The Conservation Area Character Statement for Doddiscombsleigh was endorsed by the Planning Committee on18 December 2000. Since that time it has been the subject of public consultation, with copies being distributed to the Parish Council and many individuals. It has also been available for download from the Teignbridge website - a facility that has proved very popular. Doddiscombsleigh Conservation Area Character Appraisals
This completed Character Appraisal was adopted in May 2004 via the Development Plan Steering Group as a document to support current and future development plans. Consequently its contents are now a material consideration for any planning application which affects the conservation area or its setting. It will be distributed to the utility companies, Devon County Council and other interested parties such as English Heritage. Printed copies will be available for public viewing at Forde House and it may be downloaded from www.teignbridge.gov.uk as well. The most up to date version will always be available on the website.
A full review of this Character Appraisal will be undertaken in future years, when its effectiveness will be considered and necessary amendments made.

Doddiscombsleigh within an Area of Outstanding Landscape Value
Teignbridge DC has produced a detailed Landscape Assessment of the region and in particular the Haldon ridge which towers above Doddiscombsleigh.
‘Haldon Ridge is the single most prominent landscape feature in the study area. It is an impressive tree clad spine of high ground which boasts spectacular panoramic views east to the coast and west to Dartmoor. It affords an attractive textured backdrop to almost all the other landscape character area.
Haldon Ridge forms an impressive ’gateway’ to the District. The ridge and its foothills act as a strong physical and psychological barrier separating much of the study area from the city of Exeter and its hinterland to the east. It is an invaluable visual resource in Teignbridge’s Landscape.’
The Parish Council through its comments on planning applications supports the protection of this area and the Districts Council’s ambition to elevate the areas status to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
