Elvaston WI June 13th

Our speaker for June was Keith Blood. It turned out that the talk we had advertised as ‘Gorgeous Jitties and Gingerbread’ was actually ‘Georgians, Jitties and Gingerbread’!! So much for modern technology! It was a very interesting and amusing talk, accompanied by slides, about historical Ashbourne. Keith was born in Ashbourne and had a large selection of interesting facts which even those who thought they knew the town had never heard before. He could have gone on a lot longer than the time allowed so invited himself back some time in the future. We will look forward to that.

The tombola stall at the Village Fete raised £115. A donation was made to the Sensory Garden Project.

The County Quiz, previously cancelled due to bad weather, will take place on Friday 6th September at Shardlow Village Hall.

The next walking group outing will be around Melbourne on Tuesday 25th June. meet at the Harrington at 10.30am.

Iris asked or volunteers to provide cakes for an open day at Fire Brigade Headquarters, Ascot Drive, on Saturday 29th June.

On 11th July our speaker will be Susan Hyde with ‘Colour Me Beautiful’. We certainly hope she can! Why not come along

Elvaston WI May 2013

At our meeting on 9th May, a lot of discussion followed the reading of the Resolution regarding ‘The Decline of Our High Streets’. Out-of-town supermarkets, on-line shopping and the soaring costs of town centre car parks were all suggested as reasons for this decline. In the end the majority voted for the Resolution. After this a fish & chip supper was enjoyed and two quizzes tackled.

Our delegate for NFWI AGM in Cardiff on 1st June will be Iris Campbell.

The walking Group enjoyed good weather for their walk round Bramcote Park with members from Stanton by Dale WI. Next walk is on 21st May and will be along the canal at Shardlow.

Next book club meeting will be on 14th May.

Our speaker on 13th June will be Keith Blood talking about ‘Gorgeous Jitties and Gingerbread’. An intriguing title! Why not come and join us.

April 11th 2013

This month our speaker was Christine Davies who evoked many memories with her talk on "Childhood Games’. She also showed slides of old and new versions of playground games. These memories started a discussion of different names for the same games in different areas of the country. Also most of us felt that today’s children were missing the freedom of playing games that we had, due to electronic games played indoors and ‘health and safety’ issues in the playground. A vote of thanks to Christine for making us think.

Due to the weather several events had to be cancelled or altered last month. The County Quiz was postponed because of treacherous road conditions. A new date is still to be arranged. The speaker for the Group Meeting was ‘snowed in’ but fortunately an excellent magician was found as a replacement. Our walking group was also cancelled.

Next outing for the walking group is April 21st when we combine with Stanton-by-Dale for a route round Bramcote Park and Trowel Garden Centre.

Donations are still needed for the tombola at the Village Fair on Monday May 27th.

The next meeting on May 9th is our ‘Resolutions’ meeting when we will discuss 2 items.

1.  The decline in High Street centres.

2.   Suicide of young people through the internet.

After the serious part of the meeting there will be a quiz and a fish & chip supper.

We currently meet at 7.30pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month except August at Elvaston Village Hall.  If you feel this might be something you are interested in please come along and try the WI. We will make you most welcome.
